The Field School is an important tool in generating desired technical information that needed in designing and implementing effective and achievable ecosystem management and conservation. The Field School is mainly designed for International University and College students with interest in enriching their knowledge with field experiences of natural and semi-natural ecosystems and their embedded habitats, flora and fauna. The information acquired is expected to be shared by partnering institutions locally and abroad.

.Ecological knowledge and understanding of our natural and semi-natural ecosystems is crucial in combating unsustainable environmental degradation, biodiversity loss in pursuit of achieving human livelihoods. The vice unchecked has led in many areas to drying up of rivers, soil infertility and low crop production resulting in hunger, poor human health and other catastrophes. The African Center of Tropical Ecology was established to address these issues among many others. The Center is new and unique Institution being the only one of its kind in Africa.

The Ecology of most African countries has been greatly altered to an extent that many ecosystems especially in rural areas cannot be able to sustain and provide effective environmental and ecological services such as clean air, adequate water and viable soil for agriculture. This is deemed to be as a result of heavy environmental and land degradation caused by mainly by poor management systems of the environment and natural resources together with lack of innovative alternative sources of income generation for the local people within and around these ecosystems,
